Messages from the Provost

To maintain ongoing communication with WVU campuses, Provost Reed is sending monthly messages highlighting new and ongoing initiatives that support our strategic efforts. We realize messages can get lost in inboxes, so those monthly messages also will be shared here. Check back often to stay informed!

In December 2020, President Gordon Gee issued a charge to West Virginia University to transform itself to enable the University to grow and thrive in a challenging higher-education landscape. In response, the Office of the Provost embarked on a multi-year initiative focused on enhancing and transforming the academic enterprise at WVU.

The Academic Transformation effort highlighted the need to prepare students for jobs and careers in the changing global economy, with a focus on growing and creating degree programs that are rigorous, relevant and innovative in both content and instructional delivery.

Dear WVU Faculty and Instructors:

Where did summer go? Even for veterans of the academic calendar, the start of fall semester always comes as a jolt to the system, like a double shot of espresso! Within a matter of days, more than 27,000 students descend upon Morgantown and our Beckley and Keyser campuses, bringing their excitement, enthusiasm — and cars.

I don’t have to remind you that April is both the cruelest and kindest month in the academic calendar. This is certainly a very busy time of final papers and exams, thesis and dissertation defenses, and many celebrations and recognition events leading up to May Commencement.
