Scenario #1
Johnny Mountaineer is a first-time student and finishedthe fall term with an overall GPA below a 2.0.
Johnny Mountaineer started at WVU in the fall term. Johnny finished the fall term with an overall GPA below 2.0. Will he be placed on academic noticefor the next term?
Yes. Johnny will be placed on academic notice for the spring term. His academic standing in DegreeWorks for the spring term would be P1= Academic Notice. This means that Johnny is not performing at a satisfactory level. He may continue with his studies in the spring term, but he must enter into contract with his college/department. The contract will include specific requirements that Johnny’s advisor believes will help him improve his overall GPA to 2.0 (or higher) and return to good academic standing.
Johnny Mountaineer continues with his studies in the spring term. He works hard to meet the terms of his academic notice contract and raises his overall GPA to 2.0 after the spring term. Will Johnny be on academic notice after the spring term?
No. Since Johnny was able to improve his overall GPA to 2.0 (or higher), he will be placed on good academic standing. His academic standing in DegreeWorks would be G1 = Academic Notice (P1). This means that Johnny is now in good academic standing after having served an academic notice.
Johnny Mountaineer continues his studies in the next (year #2) fall term and doesn’t do as well as he would have liked. His fall grades bring his overall GPA below 2.0. Will he be placed on noticeagain?
Yes. Johnny will be placed on academic probation for the spring term. His academic standing in DegreeWorks will be P2 = Two Probations. Johnny may continue his studies in the spring term, but he must enter into contract with his college/department.
Johnny continues his studies in the next (year #2) spring term but is unable to raise his overall GPA to 2.0. Will he be placed on academic suspension?
Yes. Johnny will be placed on a one-year academic suspension after the spring term. He will receive notification from the Registrar that he has been placed on a one-year academic suspension. His academic standing in DegreeWorks will S1 = One Suspension (P2).
If you're Johnny, what can you do after you've been notified that you have been placed on academic suspension?
If you are placed on academic suspension, you should consult your academic advisor to discuss the following options:
- Enroll in the summer term or winter intersession at WVU (only) and remediate your overall GPA to 2.0 (or higher) so that you can continue with your studies in the next regular term.
- File an academic suspension appeal and ask your college/school for permission to
continue with your studies in the next regular term instead of serving the academic
suspension. An academic suspension appeal should be submitted if:
- You demonstrated significant improvement in your grades during the previous
term, and you are closer to good academic standing.
- You can clearly articulate what extenuating circumstances prevented you from
achieving good academic standing and present third-party documentation.
- You demonstrated significant improvement in your grades during the previous
term, and you are closer to good academic standing.
- Serve your academic suspension. The first academic suspension is for one calendar year (12 months). The second academic suspension is for one calendar year (12 months). The third academic suspension is for three calendar years (36 months). Any subsequent suspension is for three calendar years (36 months).
