Scenario #4
Stacey Mountaineer is returning in the fall term after a one-year academic suspension but was unable to raise her overall GPA to 2.0 (or higher).
Stacey Mountaineer returned to WVU in the fall term (year #3) after having served a second academic suspension (one calendar year). After completing the fall term, Stacey was unable to raise her overall GPA to 2.0 (or higher). Was Stacey placed on academic suspension after the fall term?
No. Stacey’s academic standing is not determined until after she completes her first term of enrollment since readmission. Since she was unable to raise her overall GPA to 2.0 (or higher), she was placed on academic probation after the fall term. Her academic standing in DegreeWorks would have been P4 = Four Probations.
Stacey continued her studies in the spring term (year #3) and raises her overall GPA to 2.0. Was she placed on good academic standing after the spring term?
Yes. Stacey’s academic standing in DegreeWorks would have been G5 = Two Suspensions (S2).
If Stacey continues with her studies in the next fall term (year #4) and completes the term with an overall GPA below 2.0, will she be placed on academic suspension?
Yes. Stacey will be placed on a three-year academic suspension. Her academic standing in DegreeWorks would be S3 = Three Suspensions (P4).
If Stacey completes a course during the Winter Intersession and is able to raise her overall GPA to 2.0 (or higher), is she permitted to continue with her studies in the spring term (year #4)?
Yes. Stacey is permitted to continue with her studies in the spring term. Her academic standing in DegreeWorks would be G7 = Three Suspensions (S3).
If Stacey continues with her studies in the spring term (year #4) but withdraws from all of her courses, what happens to her academic standing?
Nothing. Stacey will remain in good academic standing because she withdrew from the spring term. Her academic standing in DegreeWorks would be G7 = Three Suspensions (S3).
If Stacey continues with her studies in the summer term (year #4) and her overall GPA drops below 2.0, will she be placed on academic suspension?
No. Summer can only help a student improve her academic standing. Her academic standing
in DegreeWorks would remain G7 = Three Suspensions (S3).
If you're Stacey, what can you do after you're notified that you have been
placed on academic suspension?
If you are placed on academic suspension, you should consult your academic advisor to discuss the following options:
- Enroll in the summer term or winter intersession at WVU (only) and remediate your overall GPA to 2.0 (or higher) so that you can continue with your studies in the next regular term.
- File an academic suspension appeal and ask your college/school for permission to
continue with your studies in the next regular term instead of serving the academic
suspension. An academic suspension appeal should be submitted if:
- You demonstrated significant improvement in your grades during the previous term, and you are closer to good academic standing.
- You can clearly articulate what extenuating circumstances prevented you from achieving good academic standing and present third-party documentation.
- Serve your academic suspension. The first academic suspension is for one calendar year (12 months). The second academic suspension is for one calendar year (12 months). The third academic suspension is for three calendar years (36 months). Any subsequent suspension is for three calendar years (36 months).
