Scenario #2
Susie Mountaineer is a first-time student and had below a 2.0 overall GPA for both the fall and spring terms.
Susie Mountaineer enrolled at WVU for the first time in the fall term. Susie did not do well her first year and her overall was below 2.0 after both the fall and spring terms. She was placed on a one-semester academic suspension after the spring term (prior WVU Academic Probation and Suspension). Susie successfully appealed her academic suspension and was permitted to continue her studies in the next (second) fall term. By the end of the next fall term she raised her overall GPA to 2.0. What was Susie’s academic standing after the fall term?
Susie was placed on good academic standing after the fall term. Her academic standing in DegreeWorks would have been G3 – One Suspension (S1).
Susie Mountaineer continued her studies in the next (year #2) spring term but hit another roadblock. She did poorly in nearly all of her courses and her overall GPA dropped below 2.0. What was Susie’s academic standing after the spring term?
Susie was placed on academic probation. Her academic standing in DegreeWorks would have been P3 – Three Probations.
If Susie Mountaineer continues with her studies in the next fall (year #3) term and finishes with an overall GPA below 2.0, will she be placed on academic suspension?
Yes. Susie will be placed on a one-year academic suspension after the fall term. Her academic standing in DegreeWorks would be S2 = Two Suspensions (P3).
If Susie Mountaineer successfully completes a three-credit course during the (year #3) Winter Intersession and raises her overall GPA to 2.0 (or higher), is she permitted to continue her studies in the next (year #2) spring term?
Yes. Susie is permitted to continue her studies in the spring term. She will return to good academic standing, but the second one-year academic suspension still counts. Her academic standing in DegreeWorks would be G5 = Two Suspensions (S2).
If Susie Mountaineer continues with her studies in the next (year #3) term and her overall GPA drops below 2.0 after the spring term, will she be placed on academic suspension?
No. Susie will be placed on academic probation. Her academic standing in DegreeWorks would be P4 = Four Probations.
If Susie Mountaineer continues with her studies in the next (year #4) fall term and her overall GPA drops below 2.0, will she be placed on academic suspension?
Yes. Susie will be placed on a three-year academic suspension after the fall term.
Her academic standing in DegreeWorks would be S3 = Three Suspensions (P4).
If you're Susie, what can you do after you're notified that you have been placed
on academic suspension?
If you are placed on academic suspension, you should consult your academic advisor to discuss the following options:
- Enroll in the summer term or winter intersession at WVU (only) and remediate your overall GPA to 2.0 (or higher) so that you can continue with your studies in the next regular term.
- File an academic suspension appeal and ask your college/school for permission to
continue with your studies in the next regular term instead of serving the academic
suspension. An academic suspension appeal should be submitted if:
- You demonstrated significant improvement in your grades during the previous term, and you are closer to good academic standing.
- You can clearly articulate what extenuating circumstances prevented you from achieving good academic standing and present third-party documentation.
- Serve your academic suspension. The first academic suspension is for one calendar year (12 months). The second academic suspension is for one calendar year (12 months). The third academic suspension is for three calendar years (36 months). Any subsequent suspension is for three calendar years (36 months).
